Pearls are organic gems, made mostly of calcium carbonate, and they can dry out over time if kept stored away for too long. Wearing them often allows natural skin oils and moisture to keep the nacre (the lustrous surface) hydrated and glowing.
That said, pearls are also delicate. To keep them in their best condition, it’s important to:
Put them on last (after perfume, hairspray, or makeup).
Wipe them gently with a soft cloth after wearing.
Store them separately to avoid scratches.
Maintenance
For proper care, pearls should be restrung about once a year to prevent strand breakage. Silk thread remains the preferred choice, but nylon is an acceptable substitute. Knotting between pearls is essential it prevents the loss of the entire strand if the thread snaps and reduces wear caused by pearls rubbing together.
Since both silk and nylon absorb skin oils, they tend to darken over time. Rather than attempting to clean the thread, which can stretch or weaken the knots and expose pearls to abrasive soaps, it is strongly recommended to restring them with fresh silk or nylon.
